A closed competition for the new Rai hotel, was organized by Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre and the city of Amsterdam. We collaborated with Marriott, Vastint Netherlands, Peak Development on the design.

Our design for RAI Hotel functions not only as a new entrance to Amsterdam but also as a landmark and beacon for Amsterdam RAI. It is an elegant design that ephasizes verticality without being too imposing. RAI Hotel hosts two brands, Courtyard by Marriott and Marriot but a single architectural expression was chosen in which the two brands remain visible through a subtle twist. On the one hand, the architecture reflects the Zuidas, while on the other it references the Amsterdam RAI’s classic modernism.

Each brand has its own entrance and facilities, which allows the building to be oriented in two different directions. Courtyard by Marriott is aligned to the Europa Boulevard; a route with a highly public character. It offers a place to have breakfast, relax and meet up. The entrance of the Marriott is situated one level higher and is oriented toward the ‘Groene Zoom’ and the Beatrix Park. A separate entrance for the public offices, conference rooms, and the public top floor is planned for this level. Various functions can be implemented on this location, such as ‘green’ and south facing terraces that highlight the activities and the relationship between hotel and the public.
